A Brief Organizational Profile

Introduction:

Concern for Children and Environment Nepal (CONCERN-Nepal) is a non-governmental organization established in 1993. Its principal purpose is to be an advocator for underprivileged children and their social and natural living environment in Nepal. It assists and protects underprivileged and working children living in very difficult circumstances. CONCERN was officially registered at the Chief District Office of His Majesty’s Government in 1994 and in the same year was affiliated with the Social Welfare Council under the Women, Children and Social Welfare Ministry.

CONCERN-Nepal began actively working in 1994 with a survey on the situation of child-porters in the Kathmandu Valley entitled, ‘Burden on Childhood’. In the first seven years it gained wide experience working with UNICEF, Action Aid-Nepal, and Save the Children UK among others. In the year 2000 it added work with Kathmandu Municipality on 5 Urban Out of School Program centres (UOSP/ Non Formal Education) for working children in Kathmandu. CONCERN entered into agreement with Save the Children-Norway from 1998 to 2000 and it has again renewed its agreement with SCN until 2003.

CONCERN started its work with ILO/IPEC in 1996 as 1st phase 16 months time bound programme for the support and rehabilitation of child porters in Kathmandu and 2nd phase until the end of November 2000. Now it is in the process of developing a national time bound action programme for 5 years for child porters, one of the worst forms of child labour. CONCERN has developed and formulated an action programme with Plan Nepal for support and rehabilitation of working children living in difficult conditions in Kathmandu Valley.

Vision:

CONCERN believes that all forms of child exploitation can be completely abolished and that the empowerment of underprivileged children and working children in particular is a dire necessity.

Through community awareness and different child-related development activities, these affected children can become self-reliant and independent.

Overall development of these children can be achieved through the preservation and protection of their social and natural environment.

Mission:

The mission of CONCERN is to facilitate a process that helps to protect the Rights of the Child in general, and in particular it acts to abolish all sorts of

exploitation of children by supporting underprivileged children and their families. It also works to achieve a better social and natural environment in which they live.

• To promote and preserve a healthy social and natural environment.

• To empower children living in high-risk conditions.

• To assist in the economic development of underprivileged children and their families.

• To provide current child related information to relevant organizations and individuals.

Organization Development Strategy:

For CONCERN's overall programmes, it will select human resources on the basis of experience and expertise in the related field.

CONCERN will concentrate on the development of skilled human resources required for fulfillment of CONCERN's objectives.

CONCERN's internal management will be developed and implemented according to CONCERN's board decision.

CONCERN will build up systematic networking with national and international organizations.

CONCERN will seek support from the community, governmental and non-governmental organizations as well as international donor agencies for the essential financial and physical facilities.

CONCERN will find out different ways to raise and collect financial and physical resources through its own regular income generating and fund raising programme.

Programme Development Strategy:

Each and every programme will be determined on the basis of pre-targeted community needs, the organization's objectives and its capacity.

Each and every programme will be implemented by proper consultation and involvement of the targeted community.

CONCERN will work collaboratively with different national and international organizations in order to fulfill its objectives.

CONCERN's programmes will be focused on those children who are under privileged and living in high risk condition.

CONCERN will run income generating programmes to support the programme activities.

Different groups for different programmes will formulated to ensure the proper mobilizations and involvement of the communities.

CONCERN will work together with targeted community to build up empowerment and awareness among the children and community for the sustainability of the programmes.
